Hi there friends,
My name is Claire. I’m an SEO expert. I get Google to love your business and send you ideal clients with my SEO agency Aloha Life Digital.
Alethea and I were recently chatting about Wix websites – her being a Wix expert and all – and she kindly invited me to share some Wix-related SEO knowledge.
The history
Historically, Wix hasn’t had a very good reputation in search. But that isn’t the case any more.
So I want to clear that up, and share with you some insights on SEO that make Wix a very viable platform for small businesses to build websites, and run lucrative SEO campaigns.
There was a time when Wix was really poor at SEO. After it launched in 2006, and for several years afterwards, you couldn’t do some quite basic SEO things within the platform, and as a result, it gained a – quite fair – reputation for being bad for SEO. Well happily, things have changed quite a bit, Wix has developed its capabilities, and is now a perfectly viable platform on which to run SEO campaigns for ambitious small businesses. So viable, in fact, that I chose it as the platform to run my own SEO agency website on.
What does Google have to say about it all?
Google has never specified preference for a specific platform, so there’s nothing to say that choosing one platform over another is going to win any SEO points just by virtue of the fact you chose that one platform.
My own observation is that, typically, it isn’t the platform holding people back in their SEO efforts; mostly it’s their own ability/time/confidence/knowledge to implement good SEO practices in the first place.
If you have good SEO knowledge, you can implement it on most platforms these days; the technology doesn’t matter (as long as it’s fast).
Your website is only half the deal
It’s important to remember that on-page SEO (and by that, I mean any SEO changes that are made directly to your website, rather than elsewhere on the internet) is only half the battle with SEO.
A lot of the rest of the success in SEO is dictated by how many links your website has from elsewhere on the internet.
If you have a perfectly set up website and never have any links coming in from elsewhere on the internet, your website will never be optimized for search. And that’s the same for all platforms: Wordpress, Squarespace, Wix, Webflow, Shopify…
Real life examples of Wix SEO success
I have clients who have run very successful SEO campaigns on Wix. Here are some
examples:
1st place for several high priority keywords in New England.
2nd place in search results for the whole of Hawaii.
Top 10 (and still climbing!) for the whole of California.
Wix drawbacks
Of course, there are limitations with the platform, as there are with any platform.
Wix’s strength is that it is designed to make building a website as user-friendly and untechnical as possible. So it’s perfect for many non-techie business owners and entrepreneurs.
Don’t get me wrong – there are limitations to Wix, especially for larger sites. But for most small businesses, who will seldom hit the Wix page limit of 100 pages, it can be a great choice both for SEO and for design.
So I am very happy to work with clients who are working on Wix.
